Abstract

Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that can harm the skin, for example erythema, pigmentation, aging, dryness, wrinkles, and skin cancer. To avoid those effects we need physical protection to cover the body, using an umbrella, hat, jacket and chemically using sunscreen. Research about the sunscreen activing of extract of purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) using spectrophotometry method had been conducted. The aim of this study was to obtain the sunscreen activity of purple sweet potato extract using spectrofotometry method with parameters such as persentage of erythema transmision, pigmentation transmision, and sun protection factors (SPF) which were evaluated at wave longest lambda 292,5 – 372,5 nm. The results showed that the purple yam extract at 100 – 300 ppm as a regular suntan, additional protection, and fast tanning, while the at 400 ppm activity as fast tanning, sunblock; and SPF protection being.
